Kolkata/ Nandigram: Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee has stepped up pressure on the West Bengal govt over the two controversial projects in Nandigram and Singur.
With renewed protests in Singur, police lathicharged protesters and fired tear gas shells when they tried to break the fence guarding the Tata Motors site.
The protesters retaliated hurling crude bombs at the police. Several activists were injured and arrested.
"We were working when suddenly tear gas shells started landing at there," said an eyewitness, Ramen Das.
This flare up comes nearly a month and a half after Mamata Banerjee ended her 25-day hunger strike.
In spite of promises made to Mamata by the President and the Prime Minister, the Bengal government is yet to address the issue of farmers who are unwilling to part with their land for Tata's small-car project.
There is really no surprise in these surprise acts of subversion. Tata Motors have already started construction work at the factory site.
Mamata Banerjee and leaders of the Krishi Jami Raksha Committee had made it clear that they would now resort to the tactic of guerilla warfare to pinch the Bengal government where it hurts most.
And a still simmering Nandigram on Sunday saw none other than the Trinamool leader herself addressing a rally.
Hundreds of people gathered to hear her speak against the government acquiring land for a Special Economic Zone there.
Mamata did not disappoint her listeners and the violence in Singur only added to her ire. "I will go to Singur tomorrow," she said.
The protesters against land acquisition in Nandigram were suffering from a void. It was a void of a leader, who could consolidate and guide their grudge.
Mamata Banerjee desperately needed to fill up the vacancy and she has chosen herself.
