Mamata turns Gandhi, calls mass fast

Kolkata Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee, in an obvious attempt to broad base her movement against Singur farmland acquisition and police highhandedness, urged people to join her in the hunger strike at least for 10 hours on Sunday.

"I had to resort to hunger strike following the Gandhian way of struggle when all democratic ways of protests were closed. I urge the people irrespective of their beliefs to join me from 10 am to 8 pm in the hunger strike," she said.

Mamata, who is on her sixth day of fast at Dharmatolla, said she was still waiting for Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee's response to her reply.

"I did not take even 10 minutes to reply to CM, but it is already over 25 hours since I replied to his letter. I am yet to get a response to what I said," a feeble looking Mamata told reporters.

Meanwhile Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee's attempt to end the Singur impasse have failed. He had requested Mamata to break her fast and join talks with the government on Singur and industrialization, which Mamata promptly turned down.

Mamata rejected the request to end her fast, saying the state government should consider relocating the Tata Motors' project to an alternative site.

In a significant development BJP leaders too pitched in Mamata’s campaign for the cause and sent a request to Ratan Tata asking him to rethink the project in Singur since it has already created a huge political outcry in the state.
