Kolkata: Assembly polls are approaching in West Bengal and the busiest person at this point is Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Bannerjee, ignoring her duties as Railways Minister to make sure she has the right combination for victory. And this, even as several questions remain unanswered over the latest train disaster.
For a leader eyeing to end the 34-year uninterrupted Left rule in Bengal, the backdrop was perfect. A record gathering, even by Kolkata standards, that brought the entire city to a standstill and a milieu on the stage that showcased the unity of the Opposition parties, Mamata launched her party into election mode.
She said, "You have already suffered a lot. Can you not show your grit for three-four months more? If you can, then raise your voice and say yes."
Having realised that a tie-up with the Trinamool would have yielded better results in the recent municipal polls, the Congress seems unhesitant now to become the junior partner.
All India Congress Committee General Secretary Keshav Rao said, "The Congress-Trinamool tie up can never be snapped. We will rule the state unitedly. And this will be your government." For the Left Front which is steadily on the decline, the show of Trinamool strength is a bad news though.
The failed alliance in the municipal polls is history now and the fight to win the upcoming Assembly elections has got the Opposition showing a united face. With the Congress by her side, that's the message Mamata passed on to her followers at one of the largest political gatherings here in recent times.
