New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi launched an attack on the Left party’s rule in West Bengal.
“There has been no development of West Bengal for so many years. Left government has done nothing for uplift of people here,” she told a rally that she addressed in the state.
That, some would say is a very carefully worded criticism from the Congress president of her former allies.
She may have come together with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee after ten years’ rule by the Left in Bengal.
Sonia Gandhi is firmly aware of the Left’s importance post polls. That may be the reason why the sting has intentionally been taken out of her attacks.
Even Mamata seems to be aware of this dilemma in the Congress camps.
Many wonder that if the Congress wants a deal with the Left after the polls, what happens to Mamata’s new found alliance with the Congress.
Mamata urged the voters in Murshidabad to help the Congress and Trinamool alliance win in the constituency so she can ensure progress in the state.
With 42 seats up for grabs the state; a Mamata-Sonia joint battle with the Left could have significant impact in the final tally.
At the moment, the Left party members do not seem to be attaching too much importance either to the Congress-Trinamool alliance or to Sonia's criticism.
Instead, they continue to reiterate that they will not support any Congress-led government at the Centre.
In fact Left leader A B Bardhan even commented on the dynastic approach of the Congress to who will lead the nation.
“Sonia wants only her son to be there for PM's post. If others want it, then it’s a problem for her,” said Bardhan.
With Prakash Karat sending nearly daily reminders to the Congress of his reluctance to do business with Manmohan Singh, it will be a tight rope walk that the Congress will have to do with the Left, keeping in mind a future tie-up.
