Man arrested for staging his own abduction

New Delhi: Pawan Verma, 22, has been arrested along with an accomplice for allegedly staging his own abduction drama to get Rs 20 lakh as ransom from his father.

Verma allegedly wanted the money to take his girlfriend to Macau on New Year's eve but he will have to now spend it behind bars.

"On December 27, Verma told his father that he would be back in five minutes but a little later his father got a call saying that he has been kidnapped," said DGP (central) Jaspal Singh.

Verma acting as a kidnapper demanded for a ransom of Rs 20 lakh.

However, when his father contacted the police saying that he has been kidnapped the police laid a trap.

Verma's plans was disclosed when his brother, who had gone along with the police, saw him pick up the ransom money. Policemen immediately arrested Verma on the spot.

"I had a debt of Rs 8 lakh on me that's why I did all this," said Verma.

"No nothing of that sort," he added, on asking about his New Year plan to Macau.

Accustomed to a rather luxurious lifestyle, police say Verma loved visiting pubs, bowling alleys and hookah bars in the capital.

Verma's friend Himanshu, who allegedly assisted him in the entire act has also been nabbed by the police.
