Man begs to go to prison for a peaceful life

Mount County, USA: Jail is one place most people spend their lives trying to avoid but John Witherspoon in Florida, USA begged police to lock him up. He committed a crime just to make sure the police did arrest him.

His voice echoing off the concrete walls, John explains what his life is like behind bars, “There’s no life for me out there, my life is here. Life so pleasant and peaceful in here," he says.

Witherspoon came back to the Martin County Jail on Sunday, which was just four months after he left the facility.

The 54-year old was homeless and unemployed. He was afraid as someone recently shot him with a pellet gun.

He saw an opportunity to go back inside the jail so he walked up to a stuart police officer and handed him five cocaine rocks.

Debbie Flerx who is with St Mary's Episcopal Church says many people in Witherspoon's position feel helpless.

She helps run the soup kitchen at the church and up to 200 people, many of them homeless, pack this parish hall on Wednesday nights.

“People have one primary complaint when they come into our offices, that they have no place to go and don't know where to go,” says Flerx.

Also Flerx says the church tries to help and refers many people to organizations like the Salvation Army.

Still, those groups have limited resources, leaving people like John Witherspoon to find other means of survival. Hence John chooses to survive in Jail.
