Man dies trying to rescue lovers on beach

Mumbai: In a city sometimes labeled heartless, Mohan Redkar made the supreme sacrifice for complete strangers.

On Friday, Mohan jumped into the sea to help rescue two couples who were stuck on some rocks off Bandra Bandstand in Mumbai. While the two couples were saved with some help from the fire brigade, Mohan couldn't be rescued.

“He came to save us but a giant wave swept him away,” says one of the survivors, Illyas.

While the survivors – all youngsters - may have learnt their lesson, just a day after the tragic incident, couples were back on the rocks at the very location that Mohan lost his life.

This, despite the fact that this has been the second such incident in just two months. And the nth over the past years. The police have tried to do their bit by monitoring the area from time to time and issuing warnings. But residents here say all such warnings go unheeded.

Shyama Kulkarni, a Bandra resident says, “We've tried everything. They just continue to sit here and don’t realise how dangerous it is.”

This is little consolation for Mohan's tearful family or friends who are still to come to terms with their loss and for whom Mohan will be no less than a hero.

“He was a nice man, forever ready to help people,” recalls a friend.

So while Bandra Bandstand is back to normal, if even a few couples stay away - realising those few moments of privacy in this packed city could cost them their lives - Mohan Redkar's sacrifice would not have gone in vain.
