Mumbai: Record-holding letter writer Mahesh Totlani is nowadays doing what he does best, writing yet another letter before beginning his fast unto death.
The reason for his protest – Mahesh wants a police station in Vashi to shut down because the senior police officer-in-charge has constantly been changed for the past few years.
“A few days ago, I called the police station, and they said no one was here so if there are no policemen then there is no need for a police station,” Totlani said.
And what's the reason that no officer is willing to stay in this police station long enough?
“The policemen come here but since the money is not good they all pay their way to get out of here,” Totlani said who has records to prove his point.
In 2005, there were three senior inspector were changed while 2006 also saw an equal number of changes. In 2007 the baton has changed hand twice already and all this is opposed to the normal tenure of about three years.
But Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Ramrao Wagh claims Totlani's charges are baseless even though his facts may be true.
“One officer died on duty, second one was senior and was required in some other place and the third one was also transferred as per the requirement,” Wagh said.
