Mentally ill man caged in bathroom for 14 yrs

Kendrapara (Orissa): Yet another shocking story of a man who kept his mentally ill son locked for more than decade years in a toilet has come to light in Orissa. There have been at least 12 such in the state over the last year.

34-year-old Bikash Chandra Mohanty of Kapleshwar in Orissa's Kendrapara district was confined to 5-by-4-feet toilet in the backyard of his house for 14 agonising years.

His father, Baman Chandra Mohanty — a retired government peon — says he has little options when he has a family of six to feed on a pension of Rs 1700.

“Initially we did not lock him, but when he became violent and started harming people and breaking things, we were forced to lock him in this toilet. He takes his food, sleeps and does all his activities in this toilet. At least he is safe here," Baman justifies.

The parents take solace in the fact that they can at least talk to and touch their son. They believe this is a better option than sending him to a crowded mental hospital.

The local social activists, too, say Baman’s actions are justified.

“The parents are very poor and helpless. There is no point in blaming them when there is absolutely no facility from the government for such people," local social activist Bhuban Mohan Jena says.
