Man of the moment, Somnath, turns 79 today

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: A lot of other people will be visiting the Lok Sabha Speaker all through Friday as Somnath Chatterjee turns 79.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has already been to wish him.

And though his birthday gift from the CPI-M was not what could be called pleasant - expulsion for defying party norms and presiding over the trust vote despite the fact that the CPI-M had withdrawn support to the UPA Government - the Speaker was nevertheless showered with good wishes from all and sundry.

In fact, there's been a stream of visitors to his Akbar Road residence to congratulate him for presiding over the trust vote despite protests from his party, the CPI-M.

On his birthday, he has been showered with bouquets and there is a queue of Union Ministers and MPs all waiting to meet the man of the moment.

Somnath Chatterjee was born on July 25, 1929 in Tezpur in Assam and has been a ten-time MP.
