Ahmedabad: It’s the face of an India that dumps female foetuses into abandoned wells and septic tanks; where disappearing daughters is a continuing outrage.
From a nail being hammered into her ear, to being forced to consume his urine, 28-year old Sunita Rajput says she has endured hell over the past nine years, ever since she married a man named Rajesh Rajput: All because he wanted a son.
"He got my child aborted six times. And the torture was unbearable. He tried to strangulate me, gave me electric shocks,” said Rajesh's first wife Sunita Rajput.
Seven months pregnant, Sunita now lives at a home for destitute women on the outskirts of Gandhinagar.
Also staying here is Kajal, a second woman Rajesh secretly married about a year and a half ago because he thought Sunita will not bear him a male child.
When Kajal too bore a baby girl, he tortured both Kajal and the baby.
"He said that he would kill me because I did not bear a boy. He even held my daughter upside down and beat her,” said Rajesh's second wife, Kajal Rajput.
The trust says it will take care of the women and their children, but wants Rajesh, who is absconding, to be caught and punished.
"First of all, we will ensure that the husband is punished for this crime. And these women will be here itself as long as they become financially stable,” said Director of Kasturba Trust, Pratima Pandya.
The Vadodara police have registered a case, but the long arm of the law is yet to catch up with Rajesh.
