Bhubaneswar: A man attempted to set himself on fire near the venue of the Independence Day function in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday in protest against the delay in getting his income tax refund from the government.
Forty-two year old Dutikrushna Sahu, who was among the spectators at the Mahatma Gandhi marg, suddenly pulled out a bottle of liquid and poured it on his clothes, police said.
As people around him raised an alarm, police rushed to the spot and whisked him away before he could light a match.
He was detained and was interrogated.
Sahu, who belongs to Dudurkote village of Dhenkanal district, told the police during interrogation that he was to get a sum of over Rs 53,000 from the government as his income tax refund and the amount was not paid to him.
He was trying to kill himself in protest against the delay in payment of the money to him.
