Bhubaneshwar: Two months ago 54-year-old Pramod Kumar Sahoo accidentally bit his tongue which led to a small sore. A few days later almost half of his tongue was cut off.

Pramod had undergone a biopsy on the advice of Dr Madhavananda Kar who is a cancer surgeon at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneshwar. The doctor confirmed that Pramod was suffering from cancer and recommended immediate surgery.

His tongue and throat glands were removed. However, Pramod suspected foul play and sent the removed tissues to the Apollo Hosptial in Hyderabad for further analysis. To his shock the test revealed that he was not suffering from cancer.

"This unnecessary operations are simply done to make money from the poor patients. There is a full-fledged racket. Patients having fear of cancer like me are told to come to such hospitals and are unnecessarily operated upon,” Pramod said.

Pramod then lodged a complaint with the hospital authorities but was allegedly threatened by the doctor. Meanwhile, KIMS and Dr Madhavananda have denied the charges.

"When I conducted the biopsy test cancer cells were there. That is why I did the operation. It is possible that cancer cells might not get located from the operated tissues. The patient is unnecessarily creating this confusion,” Dr. Madhavananda Kar said.

But Pramod isn't convinced. He is now in the process of filing a case against the doctor and the hospital. But more than that he wants to bust the cancer racket operating in Bhubaneswar and save other patients from such an ordeal.
