Manavjit Sandhu awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna

New Delhi: Indian trap shooter Manavjit Singh Sandhu was been awarded the country's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, on Wednesday.

At a glittering ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, 29-year-old Sandhu was given the honour by President Pratibha Patil.

Last year saw the shooter win the gold in the trap event at the World Shooting Championships in 2006 in Zagreb, Croatia. He also won the bronze medal in the Men's Trap at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Fourteen other sportspersons have also been awarded the Arjuna Awards, while three have been given the Dronacharya Award for coaching.

Arjuna awards: Jayanta Talukdar (archery), K M Binu (athletics), Chetan Anand (badminton), Vijender (boxing), Pentala Harikrishna (chess), Anjum Chopra (cricket), Jyoti Sunita Kullu (hockey), Vijay Kumar (shooting), Saurav Ghosal (squash), Subhajit Saha (table tennis), Geeta Rani (weightlifting), Geetika Jakhar (wrestling), Navneet Gautam (kabaddi), Rohit Bhakar (badminton-disabled category).

Dronacharya awards: R D Singh (athletics-paralympic games), Damodaran Chandralal (boxing), Koneru Ashok (chess).
