Mangalore: The pictures that have been playing on almost every TV channel for the past two days are of women being roughed up at a pub in Mangalore by Sri Rama Sena workers. These are the very people who also attacked churches in Mangalore in September 2008.
Mangalore, the city, once known for its buzzing vibrancy and communal harmony is now simmering with tension.
Historian Ramchandra Guha says it is the ruling government’s license that has led to the shift.
“A young boy with a trishul or a stick can do whatever he thinks he wants on the street to intimidate people. They think our government has come and we can do whatever we want and we'll show the Christians their place and the Muslims their place. And it’s the kind of license that BJP has given them,” says Ramachandra Guha.
And while politicians are busy blaming each other for the brutality at this Mangalore pub, people in the state are outraged and are demanding strict action against those guilty.
Sriram Sena's chief Muthalik is now in police custody. But will this be the end of moral vigilantism. People believe that the state government should be forced to take more long-term steps.
