Mumbai: Although summer is some time away, Mumbai has already started welcoming the king of fruits a full month early.
The prolonged and intense winter that hit the usually warm state last month resulted in mangoes being picked by farmers and transported to markets earlier than usual, preponing the mango-trading season.
That has made some people very happy.
Fifty-two-year-old Harish, a clothes tradesman, is pleased with the sudden influx of the fruit.
“My daughter is here from America and wants to have mangoes so I’m buying them pre-season,” he says.
Unfortunately, there is a flip-side to the early opening of the mango season.
As Crawford Fruit Market’s Vice President, Ram Morde, says, “Mangoes need heat to thrive but because of the cold, 50 per cent of the produce has gone bad. We are making losses to the extent of 50 per cent.”
That is the reason why Alphonso mangoes command a princely sum of a thousand rupees for a dozen in some places.
Even the humble Pairee costs anything between Rs 250-800 for a dozen.
Though the prices appear daunting, mango-lovers have not been deterred in their pursuit of the fruit.
