Bangalore: The main accused in the Manipal student gangrape case allegedly attempted suicide in custody and has been admitted to the hospital. He, along with another accused, was arrested by the Udupi Police on Wednesday.
The autorickshaw that was used to abduct the survivor has been seized as well. The third accused is still absconding.
Two days ago the police had questioned 30 people after releasing CCTV footage of the autorickshaw going out and returning to the Manipal campus.
The medical report of the student from Kerala, who was kidnapped and gangraped on June 20, confirmed the sexual assault on her, a top police official said on Wednesday. IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy who confirmed the medical report findings said Manipal University has announced an additional Rs 3 lakh reward for anyone giving information leading to the arrest of the three culprits.
Police had already announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh on Tuesday. The police had released a sketch of one of the three accused and CCTV footage of the abduction of the survivor.
The student was returning to her room from the library when the culprits kidnapped her from the Manipal University campus and gangraped on June 20 night. Police have formed 12 teams with 200 persons working on the case.
