Imphal: Denying an involvement in the drugs smuggling, Colonel Ajay Chowdhry said, "I has been cheated and not informed what the merchandise was." Chowdhry and five others were detained on Sunday by the police in Manipur's Chandel district after they were allegedly caught carrying illegal drugs meant to be smuggled out to Myanmar.
Chowdhry, who is the Defence PRO in the Northeast, was returning from Moreh on the Myanmar border and was caught at Chandel. "A senior officer whom I know came to me and since I met him 2-3 times at his place. In between he just requested that since he comes for trading to Moreh, people harass him in rout. He asked me if I could just help him to just take the merchandise to Moreh. So I asked him what it was, he said it is something he deal with. He is doing something which I'm not aware of, he didn't tell me. Somehow I have been cheated in this." Chowdhry said.
They were being interrogated at the Pallel police station, about 45 kms south-east of Imphal, the sources said. The Army said the matter was being investigated and promised strictest action if any personnel was found guilty. "It is a matter of investigation. If found guilty, strictest action will be taken as per the law of the land," Army Spokesperson Colonel Jagdeep Dahiya said in Delhi.
The six persons have not yet been arrested pending an inquiry to verify whether the drugs belonged to them, the sources said. The drugs included tablets of Respifed, Omkop, Hilcold, Polyfed and Actidin, the sources said.
