Imphal: The state of Manipur is burning with rage over alleged fake police encounters killings. There have been 52 such encounters in the state since 2006.
Human Rights activists claim the killing of former militant Chunkam Sanjit was one of many staged by Manipur police commandos in their quest for gallantry medals.
Out of 212 gallantry medals announced by the Home Ministry this year, 74 of the winners are serving in Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Alert says at least 52 encounters in the state since 2006 were staged.
Police commandos patrolling the streets in large numbers is a common sight in Imphal.
Activists allege that as their numbers swell, cops are increasingly trying to get recognition and promotion by hook or by crook.
Human Rights Alert’s Babloo Loitongbam says, “The dirty job of counter-insurgency is done by Manipur police commandos and the number of IRBs and commandos have increased."
This year, 280 people have been killed in violence in Manipur, a fact that even the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seems concerned about.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, “Of the disproportionately large number of violent incidents from the North east, Manipur's share is as high as 30 per cent.'
With Imphal still under curfew and protests against fake encounters on, law and order in Manipur seems to be caught between the Prime Minister's concern over violence and the Home Ministry's recognition of police valour.
