Imphal: Come Holi and Imphal's Sri Sri Govindji Temple becomes the centre of all attention as devotees from all corners of the state and elsewhere assemble at the temple to be a part of the Dol Yatra festival, a heady mix of dance and music in devotion to Krishna and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

The Govindji Temple is the largest of all Vaishnavite shrines in Manipur. And this is where hundreds and thousands of people come from all over Manipur and the Northeast for the special Holi festivities every year.

Apart from various traditional dance forms, a popular Manipuri folk dance, Thabal Chongba, is performed in every locality for six days in the run up to the festival. And for the traditional Holi bonfire, an entire ceremonial hut is torched.

"We get five days of holiday (for this festival). We enjoy a lot and meet our friends," says Mona, a participant in Thabal Chongba group dance.

All this mark the Holi spirit in this corner of the Northeast, which is very much in tune with the tradition of Sri Krishna's interplays with the gopis.
