Lucknow: It's a year since IIM Lucknow graduate and Indian Oil Corporation employee Manjunath was brutally murdered and his example has inspired several management students.
IIM-Lucknow student Sushant Pote says, “Not a single course can teach you what this incident has taught you.”
Shanmugam Manjunath would have been 28 this year. Instead, he is dead, killed for standing up to corruption. In death, as in his life, Manjunath set an example of how ordinary human beings sometimes go on to do extraordinary things in life.
Manjunath's teacher Dr Debashis Chatterjee says that he failed in his exams but was never a failure.
This is how the IIM Lucknow yearbook describes Manjunath: ”He laughs heartily, he sings heartily, he eats heartily, he sleeps heartily, and he plays heartily. In fact Machan must hold the record for the largest heart ever in the history of the world.”
Manjunath was fondly called Machan by his friends. He used to just love his mess. Machan was a darling of not just his friends and professors but also mess staff.
The waiter of the mess Avdesh Kumar remembers him and said that he never complained about food and ate whatever was given – hot or cold.
Manju was different from his batch-mates on campus.
IIM-L student Sushant Pote says, “Everyday he used to put a quote on the notice board, hardly anyone read it.”
He was betrayed cruelly when he died fighting the corrupt petrol pump mafia. His death is now bringing about a remarkable change on the IIM campus. But even in this death Manju taught a lesson to everyone including his gurus.
Echoing Manjunath's friends’ view his teacher said that he has created for an aspiration space. IIM students can now believe there is much more.
His friend Sachin said that someone died for raising voice against corruption but the thought process and participation of youth has started.
Remembering Manjunath, IIM-Lucknow student Sachin Jai Ram says, “Manjunath is a motivating factor, youth wants an answer for his killing.”
Manjunath has given a new direction to the youth of our country.
