PUDUCHERRY: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the convocation at JIPMER on June 30, said Pondicherry University Vice-chancellor JAK Tareen on Tuesday. During the visit he would also inaugurate the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of South Asian Regional Cooperation(UMISARC) in the Pondicherry University as well as the silver jubilee campus of the university. The UMISARC has been set up with the aim of using education as a tool for promoting cooperation between SAARC countries, said Tareen. The mechanism in place was to invite students from SAARC countries to study at the institute.
Besides, the institute would hold a number of international conferences on matters pertaining to SAARC countries, he said. The institute was established through an MoU with South Asian Foundation (SAF), set up by UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Madanjeet Singh which was signed three years ago. Already, the Madanjit Singh School of Green Technologies has been established at Pondicherry University through SAF. Under the MoU, SAF had provided a financial grant of $1 million spread over five years to impart advanced education, to conduct research, perform extensive and outreach activities in green energy technologies and another $0.5 million for the building.
Now the university has established UMISARC and commenced courses last year.
