New Delhi: Maoists in Nepal might offer to sit in opposition, despite a majority in the constituent assembly, which convenes on Wednesday.
Senior Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai has reportedly said that the Maoists will choose to stay in the opposition if other political parties put conditions before the formation of the next government.
The Maoists have said that they want an executive president, as opposed to a titular one proposed by the Nepali Congress.
Maoists also want the key posts of the Prime minister, home and defence from the Nepali Congress.
The Nepali Congress and CPN-UML set three conditions for joining the CPN-Maoists-led coalition government: Making provision of a separate president, amending the provision that requires two-thirds majority for forming and dissolving the government, and disbanding the Maoists' People's Liberation Army and youth wing Young Communist League.
The first meeting of the Nepalese Constituent Assembly will be convened on May 28 where Nepal will be declared a republic and its 240-year-old monarchy abolished.
