Bhubaneswar: Marathon kid Budhia Singh's trainer Biranchi Das has been detained by the police after the boy's mother lodged an FIR against him alleging "physical torture".
Budhia says Das beat him up and did not feed him well. The seven-year-old boy, whose exploits at long-distance running had stunned the sporting world, has been medically examined.
On Sunday, Budhia - who had been the cynosure of the nation - was back home with his mother in the slum on the outskirts of Orissa’s capital Bhubaneswar.
There were injury marks on his hands and knees. Budhia’s mother Sukanti Singh is shocked and won't let her son go back to Das. Her illusions of fame and fortune seem to have faded.
“When he came home and took off his shirt I saw the scars on his back. I will not let him go back. Why should he run? So that Biranchi das can make money?” says Sukanti.
However, Das had a different story to tell.
“Some people have instigated Budhia's mother against me. Can you believe that I can torture the boy whom I have been trying to build up?" says Das.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development has told CNN-IBN that the case is with Child Welfare Committee of Khurda and they are competent enough to handle it.
Budhia entered record books when he ran a distance of 65 km from Puri to Bhubaneswar on May 2, 2006, covering the distance in seven hours.
The run also kicked-off a controversy with several organisations and the district child welfare committee objecting to such shows involving a small boy.
