New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Margaret Alva has submitted her resignation from the party post to party President Sonia Gandhi.
It seems Alva bowed to pressure following her recent remarks that party tickets were sold during the Karnataka Assembly elections, which invited criticism from within the party.
Though the party high command was tight lipped on the issue, the matter was referred to the party's Disciplinary Action Committee.
Meanwhile, Congress Spokesperson M Veerapa Moily said that Margaret Alva herself was perpetuating nepotism in the party.
"Margaret Alva is aggrieved because her son did not get a ticket. She has no moral ground. Sons get tickets, but only when they deserve it," Moily stated.
"Alva has breached party discipline and the Congress disciplinary panel is looking into it," he said.
Alva was the General Secretary in charge of seven states, including Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab.
She met Sonia on Monday and expressed her inability to continue as party General Secretary while the matter is with Disciplinary Action Committee.
But sources say she stuck to her stand that there was arbitrary distribution of tickets during Karnataka Assembly elections
"People who make guidelines are the ones who are breaking it," Alva had said on November 6 and the party was quick to warn her.
"Nobody is allowed or should be taking the grievances to the public without discussing them first," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi had said on November 7 while reacting to Alva's charge.
