Click to play videoMumbai: The markets have opened on a positive note following good Asian and US markets cues. Buying support was seen from oil, pharma, power, metal and technology stocks. Market breadth is positive. Midcap and small cap stocks are trading strong.
At 0956 hrs IST, the Sensex was up 161 points at 15,856 and the Nifty up 49 points at 4,782. The CNX Midcap was up 62 points at 6,401. Nearly 529 shares have advanced while 56 shares declined on the NSE.
ICICI Bank, L&T, Reliance Petro, SAIL, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, NTPC, BHEL, Cairn India, Unitech, Sterlite, Suzlon, Satyam, Rel Energy, BPCL, Dr Reddy's Labs, DLF and Tata Power were gainers while SBI, ONGC and Hero Honda were among losers.
Asian markets were trading higher. Japan's Nikkei rose 2.11 per cent or 272.98 points at 13,218.28. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.73 per cent or 177.14 points at 24,364.24. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.57 per cent or 50.26 points at 8,879.66. Singapore's Straits Times was up 0.82 per cent or 25.19 points at 3,089.79. South Korea's Seoul Composite added 0.03 per cent or 0.59 points at 1,765.23.
Wall Street snapped a two-day losing streak led by technology stocks after an upgrade on the chip sector. The Dow Jones industrial average added 54.72 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 12,581.98.The Nasdaq composite index advanced 29.58 points, or 1.27 per cent, to 2,351.70.

- Stock Futures add 87 lakh shares in Open Int
