Marriages during Gujarat polls threaten BJP

Ahmedabad: The marriage season is coinciding with the elections in Gujarat. However, the BJP fears that this might keep the voters away from the polling booth.

It’s the sound of music that is making the BJP camp nervous in Gujarat's electoral heat. Elections in the state are coinciding with the marriage season as the inauspicious k-mahurat begins on December 16, however, all marriages will have to be solemnised before the week end which also happens to be the voting week. This could affect party's prospects in urban areas.

"We are not really worried. Even in the 2002 elections, there was a heavy marriage rush on the day on voting," says Yamal Vyas, BJP Spokesperson.

To add to the worries is the centenary celebrations of a sanstha in the Swaminarayan Sect. The sect has a huge following in the state and over five lakh devotees will assemble in Ahmedabad from Thursday to participate in four-day celebrations.

"This is a celebrations of 100 years of work and its on a grand scale. We expect about five lakh people to attend,” says Jayesh Mandanka, Spokesperson, Swaminarayan Sect. However, the campaign managers in the BJP have coined a new slogan saying, pehle matdaan fir kanyadaan.

The BJP knows that a high voter turnout is a key it its success in the elections. The party only hopes that the voter considers his constitutional duty more important than his social or religious duty.
