Anywhere But Home stars Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as Brad and Kate, a happily unmarried couple who prefers sunny beach holidays over visiting their parents' homes on Christmas. Each year they lie to their folks that they're off to do charity work in a distant country, when in fact they're headed for a lazy, exotic getaway. When bad weather means they can't take their trip to Fiji one year, they must drop in at the homes of their four respective divorced parents. Expectedly, skeletons come tumbling out of family closets at each stop, and both Brad and Kate are suitably humiliated along the way.
At his father's house Brad is pummeled into pie by his aggressive brothers who treat him like a sissy; and at her mum's home old family albums are opened to reveal Kate's teenage years as a fat lesbian neurotic.
Playing out as a comedy of embarrassment - not as smart as Meet The Parents but going for the same laughs - this film derives its humor from silly gags like vomiting babies, oversexed seniors, and bullying siblings. Of course it doesn't take a genius to notice that beneath these bittersweet misadventures the film's message is loud and clear - there's nothing quite like family.
Packed with vulgar humor, Anywhere But Home is that rare film about family that you might not want to watch with your family after all. It's an easy enough watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, but don't expect much more. At best it's average fare, hence two out of five for Anywhere But Home.
There's a tasteless joke in the film about Brad's mom and her new boyfriend who happens to be Brad's best friend from his youth. It's a bit sick, but it's also funny. And that's really the best way to describe this film too.
