Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs, the third adventure in the popular animated franchise about our spirited prehistoric heroes, is an enormously entertaining film that literally comes to life in 3D. In exactly the same vein as the previous films, this one too is centred around the importance of friends and family.

So while Mannie and Ellie await the birth of their mini-mammoth, Sid the sloth finds himself pining for kids of his own. On chancing upon three dinosaur eggs, he hijacks them for himself and prepares to raise his babies vegetarian and well-behaved. But before long, angry Mommy Dino emerges from her stomping grounds -- an underground world where extinct creatures are alive and well -- to retreive her kids. Along with them, she takes Sid back with her too, thus prompting Manny, Ellie, Diego the sabre-tooth lion, and possom twins Eddie and Crash to follow after Sid in the hope of rescuing him. As the gang ventures into the mysterious underground world, they encounter a relentless, one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck, who helps them dodge dangerous beasts and ultimately save their friend.

Despite the inaccuracy of its dates and calculations -- after all, dinosaurs were long extinct in the Ice Age of 16,000 years ago -- this film is a barrel of fun especially for younger audiences because it's sweet, warm, funny entertainment with a message that is easy to understand and appreciate. The animation is top class, the attention to detail is remarkable, and the adventure comes alive when viewed in 3D. It's the brand new character Buck (voiced by Simon Pegg) who steals this film with his sharp lines, and the action scenes are a sight to behold.

Scrat the squirrel is still trying to nab the ever-elusive acorn, but this time he has competition in the form of female squirrel Scratte with whom he eventually finds love.

Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs is familiar and comforting, it's a visual spectacle and one roller-coaster adventure you don't want your kids to miss. I'm going with four out of five. Grab your 3D glasses now!

Rating: 4 / 5 (Very Good)
