The movie 2 Days In Paris is a smart, romantic-comedy about a bickering couple -- a French woman and her American boyfriend -- who're returning from an unsatisfactory romantic break in Venice and are about to spend a few days at her family home in Paris before heading home to New York.
The film stars Julie Delpy and Adam Goldberg as the couple in question, and while it's got many moments of remarkable wit and humor, there's also a sombre undertone that thankfully guards this film from ever becoming silly or frivolous.
Much of the comedy in this film centres on the clash of two very different cultures.
And then there's the easily relatable theme of a man's nightmare to meet his girlfriend's mum and dad for the first time. The dialogue in the film seems improvisational, as if they wrote it as they went along, and I mean that in the nicest way.
Directed by Delpy herself -- the wonderful French actress who starred opposite Ethan Hawke in those similarly-themed Richard Linklater films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset -- 2 Days In Paris is actually a clever character study that's sharply written and neatly performed.
The humour is never the laugh-out-loud variety and yet you'll never stop smiling.
I'm going with three out of five for 2 Days In Paris, it's just the kind of film that makes for a relaxed Sunday afternoon watch. Don't miss it.
Rating: 3 / 5 (Good)
