Cast: Katherine Heigl, Brian Kerwin, Charli Barcena, James Marsden
Direction: Anne Fletcher
As far as chick flicks go, 27 Dresses is a fairly entertaining one. Katherine Heigl stars as a perpetual bridesmaid, the pretty girl next door with a heart of gold, whose gorgeous younger sister steals the man of her dreams and leaves her to plan the wedding.
It’s a fairly typical premise, and if you’ve seen films like My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Bridget Jones’ Diary, then you know exactly how this one’s going to turn out.
However, what elevates this from being your average rom-com is leading lady Katherine Heigl’s star-making performance as the naturally ebullient, happy-to-help, everyone’s-best-friend whose character we understand from the very moment she’s first introduced to us in the film – shuttling between two weddings because she’s the maid of honour at both.
It’s Heigl’s natural charm and leading lady charisma that keeps you hooked to the film despite its predictable plot and formulaic screenplay.
Also quite charming is the chemistry Heigl shares with James Marsden, who plays the newspaper reporter who’s found his biggest story in her.
Watch it on a Saturday evening, after a sumptuous dinner, it’s a perfect date movie, exactly the kind of night out your girlfriend will be grateful for.
I’m going with three out of five for 27 Dresses, you know the jokes, you can guess how it’s going to end, but it’s still a pretty easy watch.
