Masand's Verdict: Breach

Rajeev MasandRajeev Masand, CNN-IBN

Cast: Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe.

Direction: Billy Ray.

The other import from Hollywood this week is Breach, a smart thriller directed by Billy Ray based on the real-life incidents involving the 2001 arrest of FBI agent Robert Hanssen for selling secrets to the Russians.

Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper plays Hanssen, and the film also stars Ryan Phillippe as the agent in training who's assigned, as an internal spy, to be Hanssen's assistant.

Like the director's previous film Shattered Glass about ambitious New Yorker reporter Stephen Glass who was exposed after making up dozens of stories, Breach too is about office politics and intrigue and the intricate operation of being exposed.

I think you'll agree that the film really belongs to Chris Cooper, who plays Hanssen as such a sullen, stiff-necked fellow with a knack for reading people.

But he's also got another shocking side that you've got to see to believe. By the end of the film what's likely to bother you is the fact that no explanations are offered as to why Hanssen did it, but if you've seen Shattered Glassthen you'll know this isn't the first time the director leaves you to figure out some things yourself.
