Now I do genuinely believe that nobody in this world sets out to make a bad film. The intention I'm sure is always noble, but the execution is where they often fail. Still, when you see a film like Rocky, the first of this week's three new releases, you have to ask - what were they thinking?
There's practically no script to speak of, and that's what the biggest problem is. Now the film's about Zayed Khan, a rebellious young boy who's determined to clean up the world. He's unable to stand any kind of injustice, so he thrashes corrupt cops and practically maims eve-teasers.
His dad is fed up of bailing him out of jail everytime he lands into a scuffle, but his doting mum can't stop feeding him fresh kheer and piping hot pakodas.
Life changes drastically when the villain of the film kills off Zayed's fiancee Isha Sherwani as revenge. Zayed's parents force him to move with them to London, where the boy goes into a shell, and forgets all about his rage issues.
Then when he finds out that his fiancee's murderer is still on the loose, he heads back to Mumbai, returns to his insane self and beats the bad guy to pulp.
I can't sit here in all seriousness and begin explaining everything that's wrong with this film, because that would take me hours. Let's just say there is very little in this film that makes any sense whatsoever.
The humour is of the pavement kind, the sort that MAY have been funny some ten years ago. The action is absolutely gratuitous. As for the music, there are far too many songs and none that are particularly memorable. There's even a Himesh Reshammiya number called My Love For You Is Not a One Night Stand!
In all fairness I have to admit that nobody - not Amitabh Bachchan, not Rober De Niro could have saved this film. But Zayed Khan only makes it worse. He hams through his emotional scenes and gives full evidence of his inadequacies as an actor.
