Srinagar: The untimely snowfall in Kashmir has dressed the Valley in a veil of white. Yet, for residents, this beauty also spells hardship. Hundreds have been moved out of Waltengo Nar in Kulgam following an avalanche threat.
The snow is a grim reminder of the blizzard of 2005 which killed many and swept away entire villages.
Head of the Disaster Management Cell, Amir Ali says, "Some areas are avalanche prone, and we have asked people to stay on guard. We have taken necessary measures and are prepared for any eventuality."
Heavy snowfall in Kupwara, parts of Baramulla and Southern Kashmir have severely affected life. In some areas there is no power and water supply. Road traffic has ground to a standstill.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the third consecutive day. Cancellation of flights from Srinagar has left several tourists stranded.
A foreign tourist, Stephenie says, "We tried to go out but could not because the flights could not take off.''
It has been snowing for the last 24 hours and Srinagar has had six inches of snow and the higher reaches have had two to four feet of snow.
However, with the Met Department predicting more snow, hardships for the common man are bound to increase.
