New Delhi: Islamic militants have attacked the Sara Rogha fort in the South Waziristan region of Pakistan, killing 22 soldiers and taking several others hostage.
Nearly 700 militants fired rockets and mortars before storming the fort after blowing up one of its walls in the north-west tribal region
Pakistani intelligence officials say they abandoned the fort after seizing ammunition after a 6-hour battle on Tuesday night.
Islamist group, the Tehreek-e-Taliban has taken responsibility for the attack. They claim to be led by Baitullah Mehsud, the tribal militant leader whose name had figured in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.
Meanwhile, Pakistani troops came close to capturing Mehsud's associate, Maulana Fazlullah in the Swat valley. The radical cleric and his followers run a parallel administration in almost 60 villages there.
