New Delhi: If Tuesday was a good day in the High Court for the CBI, Wednesday was definitely a dampner.

During the hearing of the Priyadarshini Matoo case, the High Court rapped the CBI for failing to prove the validity of the DNA report.

The CBI failed to produce records revealing who held the custody of crucial evidences like Matoo's vaginal swab for four days after the post mortem.

Says High Court lawyer, B L Wali, "The CBI tried to explain that January 26 was a national holiday, and January 27 and 28 were Saturday and Sunday but the court wasnt convinced."

The trial court had aquitted main accused Santosh Singh on the basis of this DNA report.

In its verdict, the trial court had said that though it was morally convinced that Singh was guilty, it had to give him the benefit of doubt because of the way CBI had investigated the case.

Priyadarshini Matoo, a Delhi University law graduate, was allegedly raped and murdered by her senior Santosh Singh in January 1996.

The CBI had appealed in the High Court against Singh's aquittal. The case is now being heard on a day-to-day basis.
