Max owns up to top CII executive's death

New Delhi: Fifty-eight-year-old Jayant Bhuyan was admitted to Max Healthcare Gurgaon on September 29 following a major cardiac arrest. He was then shifted to Max Devki Devi Heart and Vascular Institute in the Capital for an instant Triple Bypass.

Max hospital now accepts that the surgical team headed by Dr Inderjit Virdi, "erred" and accidentally a wrong oxygen tube was connected to the brain. This resulted in large volumes of oxygen being pumped into the brain, instead of going to the heart.

The bubbles in the brain caused swelling and Bhuyan consequently died of a neurological condition, Endema.

Max authorities, however, call it an "accident" and refuse to term it as medical negligence.

Max ED, Parvez Ahmad said, "We take responsibility of the act. It's an accident and in healthcare we learn from accidents. We have sacked two people involved in the surgical team."
