New Delhi: In all the noise and colour of UP elections verdict, the one familiar voice that is conspicuous in its absence is Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh. With Mulayam Singh shown the way out with only 97 seats as compared to the BSP's spectacular 208, his right hand Amar Singh is not even ready to make a statement conceding defeat.
Amar Singh who loves attention, flaunts his hi-profile associates—the likes of Anil Ambani, Subroto Roy, Amitabh Bachchan—has often been asked if he is just a politician or a fixer as well. But the SP leader has warded off those difficult questions always, fought adversity with sharp retorts and sometimes bravado.
“Sarfaroshi ki tammana ab hammare dil mein hein..dekhna hein jor kitna bajuye katil mein hein (I am ready to face challenges. Come what may I will prove myself),” says Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh.
He is comfortable mixing politics with corporate deals, blending his social life with showbiz and glamour. And then after that heady cocktail, he has tried to look comfortable in the political terrain of Uttar Pradesh.
And he is probably the only politician who has mixed Lexuses and BMWs with Sitaram Yechurys and AB Bardhans. “Socialism is an ideology and is has nothing to do with one’s personal success and wealth,” claims Singh.
No matter what he claims, May 11 historic election verdict in Lucknow has made things tough for Amar Singh. With Mayawati threatening investigations against the SP leadership, there is more than one reason for Amar Singh to be more than anxious. So, the big question is where is Amar Singh now?
The enormous gate at 27 Lodhi Estate is firmly shut and there is no one to offer any explanations. As the SP leaders run for cover even the forthcoming Gen Sec Amar Singh is not seen even at his residence. Some say that he has a kidney affliction. “We don’t know where he is,” said the guard at his residence.
It's simply a vanishing act. If not untouchable, Amar Singh has become well socially invisible.
