New Delhi: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati have both been accused in cases which pose serious questions on the independence of the country's education system.
Gehlot is under fire for allegedly putting pressure on the Jaipur University on his daughter-in-law's behalf.
According to university rules, Himanshi Gehlot should have been debarred as she failed to clear the first and second semesters in her MBA course. But students allege the CM convinced the university authorities to let her attend the 3rd semester exams.
"The Vice-Chancellor gave the CM's daughter-in-law permission to sit for the exams only to increase his term. If he does not resign and revoke his permission to Himanshi Gehlot, we will protest," said Student leader, Rajasthan University, Manish Yadav.
In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh Mayawati has allegedly barred a 17-year-old from attending his board exams. The reason, Kayamuddin wrote what they allege is an inflammatory essay on the her.
"Out of the examination papers, we found a copy in which the student had written derogatory and threatening words against our honourable Chief Minister Mayawati," said deputy controller and principal of DAV Inter College evaluation centre, Shiv Kumar Yadav.
Kayamuddin said he wrote the essay, out of anger, because he was forced to appear for a Sanskrit exam instead of his elected subject English, in 2008. His complaint at the time had fallen on deaf ears.
