Maya toes BJP line, demands dismissal of CEC

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Speaking at a rally in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP chief Mayawati has accused the Election Commission of working at the behest of the Congress.

Echoing the BJP line there, Mayawati also blamed Election Commissioner S Y Qureshi for arbitrarily removing officers in her state before elections.

The UP chief minister took on the Election Commission, saying the present panel is working for the Congress and is affecting the BSP's popularity.

Only a day ago, the EC had directed that police officers in Jaunpur be removed after the suspicious death of an opposition candidate in the constituency.

Mayawati has also endorsed former CEC N Gopalaswami's earlier recommendation for the newly appointed CEC Navin Chawla's removal. She also slammed the Congress party for threatening to use the CBI to target her.

Mayawati also trained her guns on Congress leader Digvijay Singh, alleging that the Congress would use the CBI to stop her.

"The way senior Congress leaders are threatening me by saying that I misused the CBI, it appears that the Congress or any opposition party which is scared of my party can cause communal riots as well to disrupt polls here in UP,” Mayawati said.
