New Delhi: Prabhudayal and Ramlata find it difficult to disguise the pride in their voice - and with good reason - their daughter Mayawati has become the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the fourth time.

The walls of their living room are lined with pictures of Dalit heroes and with pictures of Mayawati's journey from the time she was a schoolteacher to her emergence as a political force in national politics.

Her mother recalls what she thinks were early signs of her daughter's destiny.

“When she was 15 days old, a sadhu predicted that she would become a national leader one day,” recalls Ramlata.

Her 82-year-old accountant father calls her behenji like the rest of the world. He is confident that Mayawati will live up to the expectations of the people of Uttar Pradesh.

“She will end the goonda raj and develop the state,” says Prabhudayal.

But what they want most is to see their daughter become the first dalit Prime Minister of the country.

“She is the queen of UP. One day she'll be Prime Minister,” says Ramlata.
