New Delhi: UP Chief Minister Mayawati has derailed Congress President Sonia Gandhi's dream railway project for her constituency – a rail coach factory in Rai Barailly in the election year.
UP government has cancelled land allotment for the factory just two days before Sonia accompanied by Railway Minister Lalu Yadav was to lay the foundation stone for the project.
"The land there is not with the farmers but with the village panchayat,” Lalu Yadav said but it seems Mayawati has decided to take the battle right to the doorstep of the Congress' top leadership.
UP government however claims that the allotment has been cancelled only after farmers in the area threatened to launch agitation against the acquisition.
Principal Secretary, UP, Vijay Shankar Pandey said, “The report said that there would be bloodshed.”
Whenever Congress has tried to expand its base in UP, Mayawati has been swift and sharp in her retaliation.
She launched a scathing attack when Rahul Gandhi started touring the Budelkhand region regularly. Rahul was again the target of Mayawati’s MPs during the trust motion on the Manmohan Singh government earlier this year.
Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh said, “When all the CMs are vying to get the factory, she is cancelling the allotment.”
It is apparent, Mayawati is not willing to concede even an inch of the political mobilisation she has accrued at the cost of the Congress, not even in Rai BArailly and Amethi – the islands of Congress dominance in UP.
So the political message behind the cancellation is clear, as Mayawati positions herself to lead an anti-Congress and anti-BJP front post-General Elections.
