New Delhi: Republican presidential candidate, John McCain has called his rival and Democrat candidate, Senator Barack Obama "an impressive fellow in many ways".

McCain also says he knows he has a tough contest ahead.

"I know I have to compete hard for the African-American vote. I have no illusions about that," he said in a candid speech.

He faces an uphill battle in his effort to bring African-American voters to his side. His Democratic challenger, Barack Obama, is the first African-American to be nominated by a major party.

McCain has appealed to the African-American community not to ignore him in November's presidential election despite the chance of voting for Obama.

Even without Obama, African-Americans have traditionally voted nine to one in favour of Democrats and Obama is designed to win over African-American votes in swing states.
