New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has cut down around 500 trees on this stretch outside Dayal Singh College to make way for a parking lot. The students and faculty of the college are now up in arms saying the chopping of trees was unnecessary.
The Delhi master plan has clearly earmarked 16 plots for multi level parking, but work on those is yet to start.
"After we protested, we were assured no more trees will be cut but now all the trees have gone," said Vice Principal, Dayal Singh College, P S Parihar.
Already, a large part of the college land has been taken up for the construction of the metro.
For staff and students of Dayal Singh college, it's not just about trees, it's about civic bodies appropriating public spaces for a development they don't see as sustainable.
The Delhi Master plan 2021 expressly says that no part of the city's green cover can be touched for development of parking spaces. The plan has earmarked 13 spaces for the construction of multi-level parking lots but work on them is yet to start.
"Even we don't feel good about the trees being cut down, but it had to be done," Chairman, MCD standing committee, Vijender Gupta.
The MCD has been saying the projects were not completed due to lack of resources. But, in the last three years it has collected more than Rs 534 crore as conversion, parking and registration charges.
Even the four parking projects for which foundation stones were laid recently are yet to take shape.
