MCD nets big fish in the Capital

New Delhi: You can no longer grab a quick plate of chat at Haldiram's on the Ring Road. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday sealed the establishment for setting shop in the Lajpat Nagar residential area.

While regulars at this eating joint may be disappointed, area residents are calling it good riddance. "We could not go for a morning walk and there was noise and pollution all around. They just wouldn't listen,'' says a resident of Ring Road, HS Sapra.

In the last two days, the MCD has sealed almost 200 properties in the South and Central zones of Delhi, which includes prominent stores like Haldiram's, CTC Plaza, the Bata showroom, and even the TRAI office.

But for proprietors like the owner of Hazooria House, a furnishings store on the Ring Road, the sealing drive seems to have come as a rude shock.

"There was only a pile of rags there. I had shut shop and I even have the papers for that. They still went ahead and sealed us,'' says the Proprietor of Hazooria House, Mrs Hazooria.

The heavy security cover provided to the sealing squads seems to have helped since there was not much resistance on the first two days of the revived drive. However, it remains to be seen if Delhi will be peaceful on Friday, when traders have called another bandh.

Big fish or small traders, no one is being spared by the MCD. With clear orders from the Supreme Court and no resistance being offered by the traders, it's full steam ahead for the sealing drive.
