Mecca blast: Cops weren't policed

New Delhi: It was a normal Friday prayer at the historic Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad until an explosion triggered off by a bomb planted in the heart of the mosque claimed 11 lives.

Among those dead was 25-year-old Mohammad Jaffer. Jaffer was a fruit vendor, married for two years the only and was the only earning member in his family.

His widow 19-year-old Taiseen still cannot comprehend the tragic turn of events."He was my only support. I have nothing left now," she says.

Minutes after the blast, chaos followed. Angry crowds started pelting stones and the police retaliated with gun fire that led to the loss of five more lives.

In fact, it was this firing that angered the Muslim community further.

"We demand a judicial inquiry into the police firing,” said Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

As the police try to answer the critical question on who was behind the blast , there are more embarrassing questions being posed to them. Could they have reacted better?

Could they have avoided a firing to control the crowd? Questions which they will have to answer as a historic city consoles itself to a tragic terror strike.
