Media, soft target? | NDTV office attacked in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad office of news channel NDTV was ransacked on Saturday by a Right Wing fringe group, protesting an SMS poll running on the channel.

A mob of about 20 people broke furniture, smashed windowpanes and ransacked the building, protesting the SMS poll featuring M F Hussain as a nominee for Bharat Ratna.

The activists of the Hindu Samrajya Sena also beat an employee of the channel with hockey sticks.

"They came and broke down the place, saying that M F Hussain should not be in the list. Then while going they threatened to kill us." Says Office Assistant, NDTV, Qutub Shaikh.

Channel reporters said the police took one hour in reaching the spot, though a call for help was made immediately after the incident. No arrests have been made yet.

"One of the employees has been beaten up. We have registered a case and are investigating further,” says DCP, A K Jadeja.

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks on the media.

Last week an Outdoor Broadcasting van of CNN-IBN’s sister channel IBN-7was attacked in Mumbai allegedly by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activists for airing a story critical of their leader Raj Thackeray.

In November 2007, Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Singh and his supporters assaulted mediapersons who sought his reaction on a rape case filed against him.

The same year in April, Star News office in Mumbai was attacked by a group of Hindu Rashtra Sena activists broadcasting a story about an intercaste marriage in Surat.

In 2006, a CNN-IBN journalist was attacked and his vehicle set on fire in Lucknow's Hazratganj area.
