Meerut: Violent clashes broke out between the inmates of the Meerut district jail and prison authorities on Wednesday. Gunfire was heard from inside the jail and eyewitnesses said they could see smoke billowing out from inside the premises.
Five people including the deputy jailer have been injured in the clashes. Sources say tension began after a guard hit an undertrial after recovering a lighter from him.
Following this, a group of inmates ganged up and set fire to an LPG cylinder and clashed with prison security.
The Additional Director General of Police for prisons confirmed that shots were fired in the air to reign in the inmates.
The SSP of Meerut reached the prison and tried to restore law and order inside the jail.
