Meet Munnabhai's very own Gandhi

Pune: He essayed the memorable role of the ever-helpful Mahatma Gandhi, who comes out of the pages of history books to the aid of a lovable goon, in the Bollywood blockbuster Lage Raho Munnabhai.

But actor Dilip Prabhavalkar, unfazed by the phenomenal success of the movie, remains as humble as the legendary character he portrayed on screen.

"I thought Sanjay Dutt didn't recognise me because it had been almost four months since the last roll. I went up to him and said I'm Dilip. He said hello but it was very formal. So I told him I played Bapu. Then he hugged me without breaking my bones,” says Prabhavalkar.

So, did he ever think that Lage Raho Munnabhai would hit it off so well with the masses?

"No we never imagined it would be so big. Even Rajkumar Hirani. I think it’s the toughest role I've played. Other roles I could play them as I imagined, but in this film, I was playing Bapu, the Father of the Nation. In real life, I don’t think villains will be as sober and sensitive as Lucky played by Boman Irani in Lage Raho.... They are unscrupulous and powerful so you've got to have courage and patience. That’s what the film teaches," says Prabhavalkar.
