New Delhi: A 12-year old mentally challenged girl was allegedly raped by her 27-year-old neighbour in Delhi on Saturday night.

The girl perhaps can't even comprehend the tragedy that struck her. She was raped inside the bathroom of her own home by a 27-year-old man who is a tenant in the same apartment.

The man allegedly gagged her grandmother, and locked her mother in another room before committing the deed.

Even though the incident took place late Saturday night, the FIR was registered as late as 1100 hrs, IST on Sunday morning.

The family says they approached two police check posts. One was unmanned, while the policemen in the second one directed them to the police station.

On Saturday night the victim's mother was forced to run from pillar to post seeking help from the police.

She says, had the police acted swiftly right then, the culprit would not have got away.

This shocking case of the rape of a mentally challenged child is yet another grim reminder of just how inadequate the law and order situation in the NCR is.
